Great Crested Newt Surveys

Giles Agro-Ecology is licensed by Natural England to undertake great crested newt surveys and can provide you with an ecological statement to pass to the planning authorities.

An initial scoping survey of the site will indicate whether or not the development is likely to impact upon great crested newt populations. Scoping surveys can be carried out throughout the year but are more accurate if they are performed between mid-March and July, with spring being the best time of year.

If the scoping survey results suggest great crested newts are unlikely to be affected by the development, an ecological report can be provided in support of the application.

Where the scoping survey finds ponds or habitats close to the development site which could support great crested newts, in agreement with the planning authority, we may advise that a full great crested newt survey is required. The full survey consists of 4-6 visits during the mid- March to mid-June period with half the visits between mid-April to mid-May. If the full survey finds evidence of great crested newts the results are forwarded to Natural England who then decide upon the correct level of mitigation required for the development to proceed.
